It is an illness which may cause symptoms like diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting, nausea, fever and headache. The causes of gastroenteritis are bacteria, viruses and certain parasites, found in soil, animals including birds, and humans.Gastroenteritis is also sometimes referred to as "stomach flu," even though it is not related to influenza.
Gastroenteritis Causes
Many different viruses can cause gastroenteritis, including rotaviruses, noroviruses, adenoviruses, type 40 or 41, sapoviruses, and astroviruses. Viral gastroenteritis is not caused by bacteria (such as Salmonella or Escherichia coli) or parasites (such as Giardia), or by medications or other medical conditions, although the symptoms may be similar.
Infections that cause gastroenteritis can be transmitted from person to person, especially if people with diarrhea do not thoroughly wash their hands after a bowel movement. Infection also can occur if people touch their mouth after touching an object (such as a diaper or toy) contaminated by infected stool. All such transmission involving infected stool is termed โfecal-oral transmission.โ A person, and sometimes large numbers of people, can also become infected by eating food or drinking water that has been contaminated by infected stool.
Gastroenteritis Symptoms
Gastroenteritis symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, fever, and weight loss. Gastroenteritis is usually the one that does not deserve much attention as it rarely gets you into serious repercussions. It ideally lasts for a maximum of 1 to 2 days. There are several home treatments that can relieve gastroenteritis symptoms and prevent problems, such as dehydration. A simple mixture of salt and sugar dissolved in water could be the easiest to administer.
Gastroenteritis Treatment
The mainstay of home treatment of gastroenteritis is hydration. Dehydration will make the symptoms of nausea and vomiting worse and compound symptoms.
Clear fluids should be consumed for the first 24 hours, then gradually progress the diet as tolerated. Clear fluids are anything you can see through. Popsicles and jell-o work well, since they are ingested slowly. Drinking too much fluid too quickly will distend the stomach and worsen the nausea.
Medicines to decrease the diarrhoea and vomiting may be used when symptoms are severe. Food can be given with no restrictions as soon as the patient is able to eat without discomfort. It is a common misconception that foods worsen diarrhoea but this has not been shown to be the case in carefully done studies.
